Kayden’s Gift
February 18th, 2009
Sometimes things just have a way of showing up just when you need them - maybe it’s karma, maybe it’s coincidence or maybe it’s destiny. No one can say for sure but when it happens, you know it’s something special and a little part of you, the part that tells you that all of this isn’t just chance, that we’re here for a reason, rejoices.
Toward the end of last year, among the hustle and bustle of the holidays, when it was an up at dawn, down at midnight task to keep up with the Tiny Rev order flow I was beginning to feel more tired than inspired. I was over joyed to have the wonderful increase in business but when you’re balancing a child in one hand and a business in the other, toss in the demands of the holidays and you can start to miss a lot and begin to wonder if it’s all worth it. Was I making any real difference in the world? Was it worth the sacrifice of time with my family and friends and two years of working without a paycheck? Would I ever really know if all this changed anyone’s life?
So, that’s where I was late that night - tired and unsure, having a minor life crisis - when my partner, Courtney, brought the mail in from the day. Inside was a package for me. I didn’t recognize the sender’s name or address. I thought, “Well, must be someone who received one of our tee’s as a gift making a return.” I opened it and this was inside:
A little boy named Kayden, on the other side of the country had received one of our “This Shirt Saved a Life” tee’s from his aunt Amy and loved it so much that he wore it all the time and when he had the chance to make a model of himself at school, he drew himself in the tee. Courtney looked over and I had tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t say anything, I just handed the little drawing to her and she said, “See, it does mean something. It’s all worth it,” and more than ever, at that moment, it was. It really, truly was . . . and continues to be today.
Kayden gave me a gift - it was the gift of knowing that children do have the power to transform the world and that our little mission, our Tiny Revolution, is merely honoring them and what they’ve always done. It’s honoring kids just like Kayden who want to make a difference in the world, who DO make a difference in the world.
I got in touch with Abby, Kayden’s mom, and asked her if she’d mind sharing a little about their family. I figure if a kid turns out this well then there’s gotta be some pretty cool people behind it - at the very least, I could take a few notes :). Here’s what she had to say:
Our little family of four (John, Abby, Kayden & Ryan) reside in a little house (875 sq. ft.) in a little town (Pop. 10,000) in California. Fortunately for us, our little house is right next to the gigantic Pacific Ocean , which gives us lots of room to play.
For fun, we like to ride bikes as a family. John LOVES to surf and Kayden and Ryan love to play in the sand and run around the dunes. A perfect day for Kayden would include playing at the beach, hanging with his cousins and friends, and finishing the day with a play. Kayden loves to direct plays. Announcing and holding the flash light while others perform is what he does best. It is a wonderful thing since Ryan loves to dance her heart away. I support the arts by attending all bedroom and living room productions.
What can we say about Kayden? While John and I would love to take credit for everything he is, we know that deep down he has a kind and gentle soul that is all his own. When we ask how his day went at school, he shares with us the joy he felt watching someone else succeed. Or after a soccer game, he recounts the events that led to one of his teammates first and only goal of the season. He is aware of those around him and cares about everyone. As parent we appreciate, acknowledge and treasure these qualities. We are pretty lucky.
Thank you Kayden, thank you Diodati family. You are the Tiny Revolution.
Lots of love,
BreeAnne

Customers Respond: I Have a Dream . . .
January 21st, 2009On January 19th, we asked our customers to respond to Dr. King’s famous line, “I have a dream that one day . . .” They did and we are happy to share their responses below. So proud to have such wonderful dreamers onboard out Tiny Revolutionary.
I HAVE A DREAM THAT ONE DAY . . .
“This generation will change the world so they will encounter love and not hate, acceptance and not ridicule, peace and not war, caring and not apathy. I have a dream that people will stand in another’s shoes before judgment and offer grace instead of condemnation. I have a dream that our children will not experience the prejudice of being different, but be embraced with kindness and overflowing love for all of mankind.”
- Jeni Pickard
“people won’t do “community service” but rather LIVE community service by behaving in that way all the time, helping those who need help would become as routine as eating dinner. that is my dream for our world now but mostly for my children’s generation.”

“We have a dream that one day Arbor Day and Martin Luther King Day will be combined into one super celebration in which children of all races will come together to plant trees that will bear fruits of peace. (Our 4 year old son Finn had the idea this morning, when he told us that today is Arbor King day!)”

“The people of the middle east will find peace in their hearts for the sake of all their children .”
Ruthie Brooks

“Marriage will be a right of all people who love each other, not just those who happen to have asimilar anatomy. Love makes a family, not biology.”
Jan Heart
Los Angeles, CA
“A time will come in human history when people will evolve beyond hatred, bigotry and prejudice. When there will not be a side for acceptance and a side for exclusion, a side for right and for wrong, a side for with-god and against-god, but we will all be one. Only then will be all be free.”
Jennifer Bales
“My son wil not be made to feel different because he has two mommies but will be loved and accepted for his character, instead of his family portrait.”

THE CHILDREN’S MARCH
The Story of How Kids Changed the Course of the Civil Rights Movement in America
In the spring of 1963, Birmingham, Alabama was ground zero for the Civil Rights Movement. Heavy intimidation by Birmingham authorities had created intense fear and anxiety amongst movement members and paralysis had begun to take hold. Many were ready to give up, but one night, when Dr. King asked who would demonstrate with him, ready to go to jail if arrested, the children of the meeting hall stood up. Dr. King was grateful for their offer and thanked them but refused to allow their participation. The children, however, would not be denied the opportunity to be part of change. They reasoned that if they were old enough to experience discrimination, they were old enough to fight against it.
On May 2, 1963, using a secret network of word-of-mouth, more than 4,000 black school children organized themselves to desert classrooms at exactly 11 am, touching off a week of mass demonstrations and rioting that shocked the nation and rocked the world. Police tried to stop them with attack dogs and fire hoses but the children would not be discouraged. As expected, notorious Sheriff Bull Connor arrested the young protesters and put them in jail.
Across the nation, people watched as Birmingham police abused and jailed thousands of children whose only crime was to advocate for a normal childhood. Up to now, President Kennedy felt he could do nothing about segregation in the South. After the chaos and embarrassment of the Birmingham Children’s March, he could no longer stand by and watch. The Children’s March had awakened the nation — the ugly, violent, and unjust situation in Alabama was no longer a “local issue.” The original goal of the Children’s March was to desegregate downtown stores in Birmingham. Now, Dr. King had a global stage and the leverage to demand more from citizens and from government leaders. Children made the difference and we think that’s KID POWER worth celebrating on this special day in history!

Obama, Rick Warren & The Painful Reality of Compromise
January 16th, 2009
Like a lot of people who worked hard to elect Barack Obama, the choice of Rick Warren for the Inauguration’s Officiating Minister was upsetting. It was upsetting mostly because we were confronted with our own shortcomings as middle-grounders. I came across a fantastic piece by Harvard Humanist of the Year, Dale McGowan, that gets at the heart of our struggle and gives us a good kick in our righteous pants: Click here to read the piece.
